As expected, Brazilian milk prices continued to climb in September, according to a recent market report from Cepea. The average price was at BRL 2.8657/litre on the “Brazil average”, for an increase of 3.3% against the month before and 33.8% above that in September/23, in real terms (IPCA September).

Although prices have increased 36.4% since the beginning of 2024, in real terms, the average from January to September this year (BRL 2.58/litre) is 4.7% smaller than that observed in the same period of 2023.

Price rises in September are related to the fierce competition between dairy companies and cooperatives to purchase the raw material – in a scenario that supply had been increasing at a slow pace and that dairy stocks were below-average.

The Cepea Milk Production Index (ICAP-L) moved up 8.3% from August to September. Despite weather problems, milk production continued increasing in September, since the industry kept the strategy to guarantee the volume to replenish stocks.
