China bans ruminants from Belgium, Netherlands
The ban is due to the presence of bluetongue diseaseChina customs has banned imports of ruminant animals and products from Belgium and the Netherlands after an outbreak of bluetongue disease, Reuters reported, citing two separate statements dated Tuesday.
Dutch farmers have been struggling with bluetongue outbreaks for over a month now. In early October, as many as 600 farms had been contaminated.
There is not vaccine available for the current strain of bluetongue.
The outbreaks will likely continue to limit cow and sheep exports from both countries.
