Global Decline in Beef Consumption in 2015 Linked to Health Fears

New figures released by Euromonitor International, a UK based market research firm, show that global meat consumption grew by 2 per cent in volume in 2015 compared to 2014 figures, reported Eoin McCarthy for TheBeefSite this week.

Although meat consumption recorded a year on year increase, the figures indicate that beef and veal consumption declined in most parts of the developed world last year.

“Demand for meat has been driven by emerging markets where increased prosperity and rising populations resulted in a growing consumption of relatively expensive meat,” Anastasia Alieva said.

Ms Alieva also claimed that one of the reasons for the decline in beef and veal consumption across Europe could be linked to a desire among consumers to be healthier - click here to read more.

Another report out this past week on meat and sustainability was described as ‘riddled with flaws’ by US meat industry body the North American Meat Institute (NAMI).

The report, from the World Resources Institute, claimed that average American males are eating almost double their protein requirement.

However, NAMI said the report relies on utilisation data, which are simply a measure of the amount of protein produced and moved through channels divided by the population, but this fails to take into account food waste or other uses such as pet food.

NAMI said that more accurate data are available from various US bodies, which suggest Americans are hitting protein targets on average, although some do over- or under-consume.

In addition, NAMI charged WRI with failing to consider the nutrient-density and health benefits of meat protein, as well as failing to recognise efficiency improvements in some areas of livestock rearing - read more.
